Suspected Pakistani woman arrested in Tripura: A 65-year-old woman has been arrested in South Tripura. She is suspected to be a Pakistani citizen and to have broken out of a Nepali prison and entered India. She is also suspected of being involved in drug trafficking.
Sabroom police officer Nityanand Sarkar said that the woman, who identified herself as Louis Nighat Akhtar Bano, was detained by the Government Railway Police at the Sabroom railway station and later handed over to the local police station for questioning.
He said, "It is suspected that she crossed the border with the intention of going to Bangladesh. Police and other security agencies are interrogating her to gather more information about her movements and intentions."
Initial investigations have revealed that the woman escaped from a Nepali prison and may have Pakistani ties, although her citizenship is yet to be confirmed. Further investigations are underway to confirm her identity and background.
Bono is reportedly the wife of a man named Mohammad Golaf Faraz, a resident of Sheikhupura, Pakistan. She entered Nepal 12 years ago using a Pakistani passport and began drug trafficking. In 2014, she was arrested by Nepal Police for transporting 1 kg of brown sugar and was later sentenced to 15 years in prison.
She was serving her sentence in a Kathmandu jail until last month. In September 2025, a massive prison escape occurred across Nepal amid violent anti-government protests, leading to the escape of more than 13,000 prisoners across the country. Many of them were later arrested while trying to flee to India.
Police said the accused will be produced in a local court with a plea for police custody for further interrogation.
